Corporal Cory Smith
Cory Smith was born in Akron, Ohio, 10 September 1983. He grew up in the Cuyahoga Valley area of Ohio, and later relocated to Shelbyville, Indiana, graduating from Shelbyville Senior High School in 2002.
He attended Indiana State University (ISU) to pursue his studies in Social Science Education, with core studies in history, geography, and political science. After three years of continuing studies in Social Science Education, Cory changed his Major to Public Relations. In December 2007, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations.
Following his undergraduate studies, Cory worked in retail management until he enlisted in the United States Army. On 1 April 2008, he began his Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, graduating 6 June 2008. Following Basic Training, he attended Airborne School at Fort Benning, GA; Parachute Rigger Course at Fort Lee, VA; and the Ranger Indoctrination Program.
On 3 January 2009, CPL Smith was assigned to 3rd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment (3/75). Over the next three years, CPL Smith deployed to Afghanistan twice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was instrumental in helping the 3rd Ranger Battalion introduce the new T-11 parachute system to the US Army, and as a Team Leader supervised and mentored four Rangers. On 4 February 2012, CPL Smith departed active duty to pursue his Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
Most currently he was enrolled in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science Nursing program at Marian University in Indianapolis, and graduated in December 2014. He is currently employed at a Mental Health Clinician at St. Vincent Stress Center. Cory juggles a full plate of work and being a father, yet still tries to find some time to partake in running.
Cory says, “At this point in my life, I am doing everything I can do to set my daughter and myself up for success. When I finish school, I’m looking forward to making more of an impact in the Veteran community, focusing on assisting others through crisis management.”
